  1. PROFESSSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Since 2008 when I began my academic career at the Obafemi Awolowo University, I have recorded a number of professional accomplishments as an academic Historian. These accomplishments range from enjoyment of corporate sponsorships to conferences within and outside Nigeria, invitations as keynote speaker and lead paper presenter at several academic workshops/seminars, publications in reputed academic journals, listing in leading academic bibliographic indexes of scholars and citations of my works in landmark publications across the globe. In addition to my impressive publication profiles in high impact journals, some of my articles are being cited in scholarly publications globally. It is also a mark of professional accomplishments that I was listed in the Nigerian SSH Bibliographical Update of 2011 compiled by the Institute Français de Recherche en Afrique (IFRA) based at the University of Ibadan as well as 2023 Index Theologicus: International Bibliography of Theology and Religious Studies. Also, within the first two months of obtaining my Ph.D. degree, I won the African-German Network of Excellence in Research (AGNES) Grant for Junior Researchers in November 2015. The AGNES Grant for Junior Researchers is sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). In addition, I have been invited on several occasions to review articles for academic journals such as History in Africa (CUP, USA), Ibadan Journal of Humanistic Studies, African Notes, Journal of Knowledge Economy (Springer, USA), Journal of Culture and Ideas (CUP, USA), JOGASDI (UNIOSUN), Palgrave Handbook of Social Change, among others. I was also invited in 2019 by the Cambridge University Press of the United Kingdom along with other Nigerian historians to write a standard textbook on History for primary schools in Nigeria and the text has been published and is currently being used for history classes in primary schools in Nigeria. Currently, I am one of the 56 scholars selected from leading universities across the globe to work on the Cambridge History of African Political Thought Book Project.

  1. CONTRIBUTION TO KNOWLEDGE

My area of research interest is located within the broad socio-cultural and political history of Nigeria intersecting the major historical epochs – pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial. Through my research engagements and publications in the last 16 years, I have been able to show how the pre-colonial and colonial experiences had shaped and have continued to shape the way we understand and respond to major social, cultural and political challenges facing contemporary Nigeria. These challenging issues to which my research exertions have been focused include: politics, policing, religions and security issues; HIV/AIDS and health management in Nigerian history; and historiography, biography and institutional history. In these three broad but related areas, I have been able to show, through my publications, that lack of historical understanding and appreciation of political, ethnic, religious and other parochial issues have been largely responsible for the failure of nation building and national development efforts in contemporary Nigeria. Emanating from my doctoral research on policing and the decolonisation process in Nigeria, I have be able to contribute to knowledge in the areas of the nexus of politics, policing, religions and security challenges in colonial and post-colonial Nigeria. I have equally made scholarly contributions to issues in historiography, bibliography, biography and institutional history in many of my publications. Developing from my Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) research and thesis, I have been able to show the connections between people’s cultural background, their indigenous medical thought/practices and modern government policies through my publications in the areas of medical history of Nigeria. My major contributions to historical knowledge and scholarship could be summed up in the position that I have advanced in my publications that much can be learned from Nigeria’s pre-colonial and colonial past in understanding the contemporary socio-cultural and political challenges and tackling them in the best possible ways. Thus, I am convinced about the contributions and values of my research endeavours to an understanding of the socio-cultural and political challenges facing Nigeria and the historical panaceas to these challenges.
