Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University

Head of Department’s Welcome Address

On behalf of the Department of History, I warmly welcome visitors, colleagues, alumni, and students to our Departmental webpage.

The Department of History at Obafemi Awolowo University has, since its inception 1962, maintained a proud tradition of rigorous scholarship, critical inquiry, and public engagement. The Department has played a pioneering role in the development of African historiography, contributing significantly to the re-interpretation of Africa’s past and the promotion of historically grounded perspectives on contemporary issues.

Our academic programmes are designed to foster analytical thinking, methodological competence, and intellectual independence. Members of staff are actively engaged in teaching and research across diverse areas of historical inquiry, including political, social, economic, cultural, gender, environmental, and intellectual history, as well as historiography and historical theory.

The Department places strong emphasis on mentoring students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are committed to producing graduates equipped not only with sound historical knowledge, but also with transferable skills relevant to academia, public service, education, media, diplomacy, and other professional fields.

We take great pride in our alumni, whose achievements in Nigeria and across the world continue to testify to the quality of training offered by the Department. Their ongoing engagement and support remain invaluable to our growth and development.

As a Department, we recognise that history is indispensable to understanding society, governance, identity, and change. In a rapidly evolving world, historical scholarship remains essential for informed citizenship and responsible leadership. We therefore remain committed to academic excellence, innovation, and meaningful engagement with the wider society.

We invite you to explore our programmes, research activities, publications, and events, and we look forward to continued collaboration with scholars, institutions, and stakeholders who share our commitment to historical knowledge and critical inquiry.
